Welcome, I’m Silvin Knight, a research scientist currently living and working in Dublin, Ireland.  If you have any questions, or would like to chat about any possible future research / collaboration opportunities, please do not hesitate to contact me.

I am currently working as a Research Fellow at Trinity College Dublin (Dublin, Ireland), within The Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing (TILDA) group.   My current research is focused on modelling cerebrovascular perfusion and oxygenation (measured using MRI Arterial Spin Labeling (ASL) and Near-infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS)), as well as other neurovascular / cardiovascular measures, in a large, nationally-representative cohort (N>8000).

Previous to this I worked on developing production methodologies for the commercialisation of a novel ultrasound breast phantom at Dublin Institute of Technology (Dublin, Ireland).  The device was designed to provide a test-bed for the training of ultrasound sonographers.

I completed a PhD (Clinical Medicine / Medical Physics) in the Imaging Physics Group at Trinity College Dublin, which was focused on improving the accuracy of dynamic contrast enhanced (DCE) MRI for the detection of prostate cancer.  This research also included the design and manufacture of several imaging phantoms, including a novel DCE-MRI anthropomorphic dynamic prostate phantom device which allowed for the quantification of errors in prostate DCE-MRI acquisition protocols.

I received my BSc in Physics (with Medical Physics and Bioengineering) from Dublin Institute of Technology in 2013, graduating with first-class honours (1:1).  During my under-graduate degree I also undertook a 9-month internship in the Medical Physics and Bioengineering department at St James’s Hospital (Dublin, Ireland), as well as worked on the development and implementation of a novel noise reduction algorithm for Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) data, based around the concept of principle component analysis.

Prior to the career change into physics in 2010, I worked for over 10 years in the design / advertising industry, as a graphic designer / project manager.
